Note: Variations can be made to ribbon width, length and method to secure – see end of tutorial for how to accommodate for variables)
Supplies:
15 inches - 5/8” Iron-On Glitter Strip (available at hair-hardware.com)
15 inches - 7/8” Ribbon (grosgrain or satin)
3 inches - 3/8” Ribbon
5 inches - 3/4” Non-Roll Elastic
15 inches - 3/8” Velvet Ribbon (or other non slip method if you prefer something different)
Hot Glue -or- Fabric Glue -or- 3/8” fusible webbing hem tape (like Stitch Witchery or Heat N’Bond)
Scissors
Iron
Needle/Thread
1. Cut the glitter strip, ribbon, fusible webbing and velvet to 15 inches – You may adjust this measurement based on your individual need; just make sure all 3 pieces are the same length.
2. Carefully place the glitter strip exactly on top of the ribbon strip. Cover with a pressing cloth and iron for 30 seconds. It’s easiest to work in 5-6 inch segments at a time.
3. Turn the entire ribbon piece over and cover with the pressing cloth to iron the inside, too. This will ensure a good bond.
4. Adhere the velvet strip to the inside of the headband. I prefer to use hot glue. A flat dispensing tip will work best, but you can also use a standard tip. Do not over apply the glue. A little goes a long way. Glue the velvet to the ribbon side of the ribbon/glitter strip. Be careful to keep it centered.
*If you use fusible webbing apply it to the back of the velvet. Be sure not to push too hard or you will crush the velvet. Follow the instructions for the brand of fusing you are using. Some have a paper backing and some do not.
5. Cut the elastic to 5” and sew to connect the two ends of the ribbon together.
6. Wrap the 3/8” ribbon around the seam to cover and secure with a few stitches for a finished look.
Variations:
• If you want the entire inside of the headband to be covered with velvet, use 5/8” velvet. If you do this you can iron the glitter strip directly to the velvet and you won’t need the other piece of ribbon.
• Vary the look of the headband and give a two color effect by using different width ribbon. You can use 7/8” ribbon to iron the glitter strip to. This will give a two color effect. Just be careful to center the glitter strip to the ribbon.
• You can also get a different look by ric-rac glitter strips.
